The Casa Marina neighborhood in Key West, Florida is located on the southernmost part of the island, close to Higgs Beach and the White Street Pier. This neighborhood gets its name from the grand Casa Marina Hotel- now part of the Waldorf Astoria Collection of elegant hotels. The Casa Marina Hotel was built in 1918 and designed by Thomas Hastings and John M. Carrere- also known for designing New York’s Metropolitan Opera House and the New York Public Library. It was the final stop for travelers aboard Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railway. The Casa Marina area is also home to the West Martello tower, a historic civil war battery, which now houses the Key West Garden Club and public gardens. Nearby Higgs Beach is a great public beach to play in the sand and get some sun. Higgs beach is also home to playgrounds, sand volleyball, tennis courts and an expansive dog park. For pups that like to swim, there is a small area of beach at the end of Vernon Avenue just for dogs and located next to Louie’s Backyard- a waterfront fine dining establishment nestled into the Casa Marina neighborhood. Have a cocktail at the Afterdeck- Louie’s Backyard’s bar, and watch the sun go down if you’re looking for a change of pace from the Mallory Square sunset celebration.
